"Arrival at Stowe" - aviation art by Simon Cattlin
The young Leonard Cheshire was a student at Stowe School in the early 1930’s and it’s likely that his first encounter with aviation would have been during those years. The painting depicts one of the occasional summer visits by Geoffrey De Havilland in a DH85 Leopard Moth who would land beside the school’s playing fields to take a few of the boys flying.
G-ACHD was the original prototype DH85 that Geoffrey De Havilland flew to winning place in the 1934 Kings Cup. The DH85 was designed as a primary trainer option for the RAF, it found a willing civilian market place and there are still examples flying today.
The painting was commissioned, through the Guild of Aviation Artists, as part of a set of new works to celebrate the life of Leonard Cheshire, a London exhibition of these paintings takes place at the Mall Galleries during July 2018.
Original oil on canvas, image size 76cm x 61cm. Signed by the artist.
