“Cassini’s finale” captures the final moments of the very successful 20yr long Cassini-Huygens mission. The two part mission by NASA and the European Space Agency was designed to massively broaden our knowledge of Saturn and its 60+ moons. The Huygens probe was detached to land on Titan’s surface and Cassini completed 13yrs of activity within the Saturn system before, as a grand finale, it was deliberately steered into Saturns atmosphere to burn up in the upper level clouds. The painting captures the moment on September 15th 2017 when the tiny Cassini probe streaks across the upper atmosphere as a tiny man-made firework in this huge cloudscape.
