The English Electric Lightning was a phenomenal symbol of extreme fighter design during the post war years. The F2 was perhaps the prettiest , and most popular, of the early versions and boasted an improved flight envelope with a fully variable re-heat and an automatic flight control system.

In this painting a 19 Squadron Mk 2 is climbing steeply far above the summer cloud deck with strong sunlight reflecting off the unpainted upper surfaces.
