"Gas giant from an ice cave on a distant moon" - astronomical art by Simon Cattlin

from £75.00
sale

Many light years from Earth the brightly lit gas giant is framed from the mouth of an ice cave on an inner moon. The sun is behind us highlighting the icy surface towards the horizon beyond the shadowed cave entrance.

Exoplanet discovery is proceeding at a dizzying pace and, one day in our specie’s future, astronauts will be able to stand in a cave like this looking out at such a dramatic scene. I haven’t based this scene on a particular exoplanet discovery but the moon, with its thin atmosphere, orbits close enough to its local gas giant for tidal forces to have heated its primordial core enough for huge lave tubes to form on its rocky surface. As the moon cooled ice sheets formed over the volcanically shaped surface with jagged peaks, deep fissures and crevasses stretching to the horizon.

Original oil painting on deep sided canvas, image size 80cm x 60cm. Signed by the artist.
