Some of the most dramatic sunrises and sunsets occur at the poles. This painting depicts a vividly lit dawn scene high above the still dark ice sheet as an anti-cyclonic system drifts across a medium level altitude platform.
I wanted to convey the light from a burning star piecing the cold upper air and warming the clouds with vibrant hues pushing back the ice cold blue and black of an arctic night.
