A Pathfinder Force de Havilland Mosquito Mk IX speeds away from its release point after dropping target indicator flares ( TI’s) high over a target area during April 1944. The Mosquito has always been considered an iconic aircraft but, the more we study the history of WWII, the more we recognise what a war-winning capability de Havilland had delivered to the RAF and allied airforces.

From un-armed bomber and reconnaissance versions through to night-fighter, fighter bomber, torpedo bomber variants the Mosquito served brilliantly across a wide range of roles and theatres. The bomber and reconnaissance versions had no defensive armament and they relied on speed to carry it through enemy airspace, Mosquito units typically had a relatively low casualty rate vs other types conducting strike missions and achieved an enviable record of success.

Original oil painting on canvas, image size 76cm x 61cm, framed. Signed by the artist.
