"Seeking the dark - final mission 2" Aviation art by Simon Cattlin
This is the second of the "final mission" paintings of Lancaster LM490 LS-L of 15 Squadron. The aircraft took off from Mildenhall on March 24th 1944 as part of a large bomber force and made its way to Berlin, the painting picks up LM490 climbing slightly following its bomb release as its moves away from the flak, searchlights and fires.
LM490 was subsequently attacked by a luftwaffe nightfigher and is believed to have exploded near Tetlow which is 16km southwest of Berlin. All the crew were killed in the attack and, after initial burial in Tetlow, now lie in the Berlin 1939-1945 war cemetery.
During the war Bomber Command's losses remained stubbornly high with only a small proportion of heavy bomber crews completing their first operational tours. LM490 was lost with only 11hrs flown.
