“Unleashed” is the test flight of a new Spitfire IX prior to delivery to a front line Squadron. The mark IX was principally developed as an urgent response to the improved BF 109G and the arrival of the Focke-Wulf 190A which was outclassing the Spitfire V. It was achieved by fitting the Merlin 60 to the then current VC airframe. The slightly lengthened cowling was the only visual change to the airframe and the new Mk IX had a top speed of 402mph with a much-improved rate of climb and acceleration.
With 5,609 Mk IX’s built this “interim” model became the most widely supplied version of the Spitfire and helped the RAF re-establish ascendancy over the Luftwaffe for tactical air supremacy.
