"Up early and ready" - aviation art by Simon Cattlin
Its spring 1940 and 2 Spitfire Mk1's of 19 Squadron are training above the early morning cumulus as the sun starts to climb higher on a lovely bright morning. The "phoney war" has been going on since autumn 1939 and, whilst there has been some sporadic contact with Luftwaffe intruders, no major air battles have yet been fought. Within a few weeks the Germans will invade France and the Battle of Britian will start in August.
19 Squadron was the 1st unit to equip with the Spitfire in August 1938 and started to document the early stage development of our iconic fighter. During this period of 1940 the bubble canopy, armoured front screen , revised aerial and the 3 blade de-havilland constant speed propeller were added as field modifications. The markings were evolving as well, at this point the 19 logo had been removed from the tail but the red/white/blue fin flash and the yellow roundel border had not yet been added to the fuselage.
Original oil on canvas, image size 76cm x 51cm. Signed by the artist. The painting is framed (gold) and that is included in the price.
