A fast climbing English Electric Lightning F3 of 29 Squadron lifts high into the stratosphere highlighted by crepuscular rays above a sunlit cloud-deck.
The Lightning was an iconic British fighter during the cold war and possessed many outstanding qualities, it had an awesome climb rate and could exceed mach 1 vertically. Following the F.1 & 2 models, the F.3 had higher thrust Rolls-Royce Avon 301R engines, a larger squared-off fin and strengthened inlet cone allowing a service clearance to Mach 2.0 (2,450 km/h).
XP694 was the second F3 built, in May 1963, and was retained for advanced testing before allocation to 29 Squadron. It served with several RAF fighter squadrons during a long operational life. It was retired from service in September 1987.
