"Apollo ascent" - aerospace art by Simon Cattlin
At 09.32 EDT on July 16th 1969 Apollo 11, crewed by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin, launched from Cape Canaveral in the first attempt to land on the moon. The Saturn 5 rocket stands 363ft high and produces 7.6 million pounds of thrust - it’s the single most powerful vehicle ever created by mankind.
Under 3 minutes later, Apollo 11 had climbed to 200,000ft and was travelling upwards at over 6,000mph. “Ascent” captures Apollo 11 still accelerating hard through the upper stratosphere, streaming coolant, ahead of the 1st stage separation following ejection of the escape tower and engine skirts.
