"The quest continues" - aviation art by Simon Cattlin
"The quest continues" is a painting of a fast moving DH108 Swallow VW120 preparing for its world speed record on April 12th 1948, it is likely that John Derry may have taken the aircraft supersonic on September 6th 1948 although that was never officially recognised.
There were 3 DH108 Swallow prototypes ( TG283, TG306 and VW110) all designed to explore swept wing characteristics across a range of speeds upto the sound barrier and into the transition to supersonic flight. The Swallow configuration was based on the German Messerschmitt 163 Komet and was constructed with many airframe sections and the engine from the de Havilland Vampire.
These aircraft represented the cutting edge of high speed exploration at the end of the 1940's as part of the first generation of jet aircraft. All 3 aircraft were destroyed between 1946 and 1950 in fatal crashes which claimed the lives of Geoffrey de Havilland Jr, Sqn Ldr Stuart Mueller-Rowland and Sqn Ldr George EC Genders.
